چکیده

Neural populations in the neocortex typically encode multiple stimulus features, e.g., position, brightness, contrast, and orientation of a visual stimulus in the case of cells in area 17. Here, we perform a Fisher information analysis of the encoding accuracy of a neural population which is sensitive to D stimulus features. The neurons are assumed to exhibit a non-vanishing level of baseline activity. It is shown that the encoding accuracy decreases drastically with D if the spike count variance depends on the mean spike count, as is the case for Poissonian spike statistics. The need to reduce the susceptibility to background noise thus poses severe restrictions on the neural "ring statistics or the number of encoded stimulus features. The results hold for uncorrelated as well as for correlated activity in the neural population. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 87.19.La, 02.50.!r

طبقه‌بندی پتانسیل‌های عمل نرونی با استفاده از شبکه‌های عصبی شعاعی

Background: Studying the behavior of a society of neurons, extracting the communication mechanisms of brain with other tissues, finding treatment for some nervous system diseases and designing neuroprosthetic devices, require an algorithm to sort neuralspikes automatically. However, sorting neural spikes is a challenging task because of the low signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the spikes. The mai...

Distortion of Neural Signals by Spike Coding

Analog neural signals must be converted into spike trains for transmission over electrically leaky axons. This spike encoding and subsequent decoding leads to distortion. We quantify this distortion by deriving approximate expressions for the mean square error between the inputs and outputs of a spiking link. We use integrate-and-fire and Poisson encoders to convert naturalistic stimuli into sp...

A new framework for Euclidean summary statistics in the neural spike train space

Statistical analysis and inference on spike trains is one of the central topics in the neural coding. It is of great interest to understand the underlying structure of given neural data. Based on the metric distances between spike trains, recent investigations have introduced the notion of an average or prototype spike train to characterize the template pattern in the neural activity. However, ...

A simple model for low variability in neural spike trains

Neural noise sets a limit to information transmission in sensory systems. In several areas, the spiking response (to a repeated stimulus) has shown a higher degree of regularity than predicted by a Poisson process. However, a simple model to explain this low variability is still lacking. Here we introduce a new model, with a correction to Poisson statistics, which can accurately predict the reg...

Role of STDP in regulation of neural timing networks in human: a simulation study

Many physiological events require an accurate timing signal, usually generated by neural networks called central pattern generators (CPGs). On the other hand, properties of neurons and neural networks (e.g. time constants of neurons and weights of network connections) alter with time, resulting in gradual changes in timing of such networks. Recently, a synaptic weight adjustment mechanism has b...
